Subject: Inquiry from BentProp Web Site Maj. Harry Scullin

I found your story about my Uncle Harry quite interesting.

My father Bernard Scullin, now deceased, was Harry's only Brother.

We were in San Francisco when the telegram about Uncle Harry being MIA came in, I was only about 4 at the time and my father was in the Navy Stationed at the navy base there. Aunt Catherine whom you delivered the flag to in St. Louis was living at my Dads house while he served. Catherine is now deceased.

When I was in the Marine Corps in the 50's during roll call one day a passing Gunny heard my name and called me out.

He was Uncle Harry's flight crew chief on the Island base that Uncle Harry took off from his last day.

The Gunny told me that on takeoff Harry blew a tire and took another plane Against the advice of the Gunny because as Commanding officer Harry had the best plane they had. He advised him that the other aircraft was not in that good of shape.

Harry replied --We have to get a Jap Fleet and I am Leading the attack on the Aircraft Carrier.

The other pilots that returned told the Gunny that after they dropped the torpedoes the carrier was on fire and smoking heavily,
Harry's plane never came back up out of the smoke.

That's what I was told.

Thanks for your information, Uncle Harry would not have been his normal assigned aircraft that day.

Thank You so much for the information on my Uncle

John C Scullin
